Read full description of the books:
The Screwtape Letters provides lessons in the importance of taking a deliberate role in living out Xian faith by portraying a typical life, with its temptations & failings, as seen from devils' viewpoints. Screwtape holds an administrative post in the bureaucracy of Hell & is a mentor to an inexperienced tempter. In the body of the 31 letters which make up the book, Screwtape gives Wormwood advice on methods of undermining faith & promoting sin, interspersed with observations on human nature & Xian doctrine. Wormwood & Screwtape live in a morally reversed world, where individual benefit & greed are seen as the greatest good. Neither demon is capable of comprehending God's love for humanity or acknowledging true virtue.
Versions of the letters were originally published weekly in the Anglican periodical The Guardian between May & November 1941. The standard edition has an introduction explaining how the author chose to write it. Lewis wrote the sequel Screwtape Proposes a Toast in '59, a critique of trends in public education. An omnibus edition with a new preface by Lewis was published by Bles in '61 & MacMillan in '62. The Screwtape Letters is one of Lewis' most popular works. He claimed it was "not fun" to write & "resolved never to write another 'Letter'."
